    Loaded Touring on Bianchi Eros

I have a Bianchi Eros that I purchase in 02 and would like to do a loaded tour across the US.  I would like to save some money by using this bike, however if it will not be up to the weight and distance, I would consider another model all together.  I plan to change the front fork to accomodate for a larger tire and mud guard and replace the crank set for the hills.  Any opinion out there whether or not this frame is up to the 45 lbs of gear for a 4400 mile trip?    Any suggestions as to anything else I should change to make the Eros loaded tour worthy?  Smile [:)]I would appreciate any opinions on this.

    Sir Gibbie

Hi there Sir Gibbie - I'm more than a little jealous at your impending adventure! I don't think your bike will struggle with an extra 45lbs of luggage - unless you're a huge rider to start with! I've never been below 200lbs and have had no frame problems with any of my bikes, although I do snap spokes on occasion. You'll need a comfy saddle and probably the fattest tyres that will fit - something like the Continental Ultra Gator Duraskin or the Specialized All Condition Armadillo. I've used both for winter training and commuting and had no problems. They absorb the bumps way better than my summer tyres too. Don't forget your chamois cream either!

Re: Loaded Touring on Bianchi Eros

I have a Bianchi Eros that I purchased way back in 1998!  It remains my number one touring bicycle, probably has over 10,000 fully loaded touring miles on her, with another 20,000 recreational miles.  I've tried a couple of other bikes and ridden with numerous folks and am convinced that it's the only bike I'll ever tour on.   I don't think you'll have any weight bearing problems with your Bianchi.  Be sure to post about your trip after you've finished!  Good Luck and happy trails.
